I do want to take the time during my little break to comment on the passing of county Director of Recreation and Parks Gary Arthur.
I'd gotten to know Gary a little bit due to his involvement in bringing the turfed, multipurpose fields to Howard County parks. My first interactions with him came in my role as a parent of a youth football player, and as a youth football coach. Later, as Oakland Mills Village Board Chair, I worked with him and his staff on the planning and development of Blandair Regional Park.
I found Gary to be a creative leader with a long memory-- he's one of those people who possessed extensive institutional memory and insight, someone who could recall anything that Rec and Parks had done in the last 20 years in any corner of the county, at a moment's notice. County government will be poorer for losing that experience and insight.
