In Tuesday's post I wrote about things to work on for me in 2011. In this post I'm writing about things I'm planning/hoping to do to make this blog bigger and better in 2011.
The first thing I'm going to do is work on this comments thing. I don't get much in the way of comments on 53 Beers. Don't know quite why this is. Some have said that my writing style is very forceful (go figure!) and doesn't lend itself towards debate and discussion. That may be. I do think that I am going to write more posts in an open-ended manner in order to invite comment. But looking at the history of this blog-- I've written more blog posts than I've received comments to blog posts. For me that's a problem and I want to change that.
I told myself last year that I'd get more involved in the local blog community and I think I've done that, though not as much as I had hoped. So that's a point of continuing improvement for 2011. That effort starts off on a strong foot with my co-hosting one of the local blog parties on January 20th (shameless self-promotion of this event will come after January 1st) but will continue. I plan to be much more active in local charitable functions and events this year and so this will give me more opportunity to write posts from a bit of a different perspective. It also allows the opportunity for the blog to be more well known, in different circles.
Third-- I'm going to expand the scope of this blog, but just a little bit. Towards the end of 2010 I started writing some posts about things going on in nearby counties-- Baltimore County, Montgomery County, Carroll County-- and they seemed to have been well-received. Most Howard Countians work outside of Howard County, and a lot of people who work and come to Howard County for other purposes live elsewhere. So we are of course interconnected with this region-- this being the case, whereas the thrust of this blog will continue to be Howard County, it's fair to say that in the future we will have more of a regional focus.
Fourth are some structural and appearance changes. I do like the new layout of the blog, if I must say so myself. Of course, I just love blue! But I am going to add more photos to my posts. Plan on upgrading the ol' smartphone this year (IPhone? Evo? IPhone? Evo?), so that'll make the job easier. Another thing I'm going to do is to add a Twitter feed. I think this will give me the opportunity to comment on a lot of quick things that don't rate a full-fledged blog post. Such as my Christmas Eve sightings of the Columbia Bike Guy along Broken Land Parkway. So look for the Twitter feed sometime early in the New Year--- hmm, perhaps in time for the blog party?
So those are four things to do for the new year. If I do them well, they will be more than enough!
And so, your friend the Marshmallow Man signs off for 2010. But I will be a -lurking, so I'd of course appreciate your comments, and additional suggestions! It's possible I could find my way to knock some of these items off my list.
Have at it, true believers! Talk with you soon!
