It's a double shot Friday, because 1. Good ol' MM is clearing the deck for a weekend whose main point of business will likely be the ungodly heat, and 2. I have been remiss in writing upon this article by the great Lindsey McPherson, and I just needed to let it out!
So at the Council worksession June 21, senior VP for Howard Hughes John deWolf, who replaced Greg Hamm as the man in charge of making sure downtown Columbia is redeveloped the Howard Hughes way (with scraggly hair and 6-inch fingernails) got all up at the Council for daring suggest that the downtown partnership board of directors be composed in such as way as not to be so damn super friendly to Howard Hughes.
The nerve of our County Council. Not.
It's not the job of our elected officials to believe in the "invisible hand" of the free market. Nor is it to give blind trust to government. It is to get all stakeholders to work together for the greater and common good. And I feel that means the composition of this particular board needs to be representative of the community.
As for deWolf's claim that there wasn't a line of companies ready to take on Columbia as a project-- maybe, but don't drop the "only game in town" card on us. That won't work. So John deWolf, know your role and shut your mouth, or you'll get stuck in the dirty South.
I do understand that since then that some of those involved in the June 21 donnybrook have talked and that everyone has gotten closer to deciding that they all live in a Yellow Submarine. That's very special. But the proof is in the doing, and so we'll see how docile "The Wolf!" is when the next public function occurs.
