Slowly but surely, the New New City is forming. The latest evidence comes in this article by Lindsey McPherson about the construction of the HCGH-Blandair pathway, which will commence in early 2013. The article gives a great summary of the project and describes a number of the considerations of the planning, as well as a bit of a picture of what this thing will look like when complete.
There are some things here that make me chuckle. Like that parts of the pathway will be lit. I can remember, not so long ago, when Columbians fought hammer and tong over lighting the pathways. Why, lit pathways are anathema to everything Columbia is, they would bellow. Jim Rouse would never see to such a thing. Dude, Jim Rouse saw to River Hill.
Another bit is that the pathway construction won't interfere with Wine In The Woods. Oh, by all means, that must not happen. There is too much building of the annual DUI statistics at stake for that to happen. Actually, I once heard this but not confirmed, that arrests made for alcohol and drug-related crimes at public events like WITW and at Merriwether's concerts are not counted into the county's official statistics if the accused offender is not a county resident. Wish I could confirm or refute that. Or that someone would!
But, this is not a post about that. I think the construction of this pathway is monumental towards the creation of the next Columbia. It is literally building the backbone from which so much promises to come.
