Sorry, Navy fans, but today's Army-Navy game is running second fiddle this weekend. For the big event in the local sports scene is Sunday's Ravens-Redskins game at the Skins' home field, FedEx Field in Landover.
The quadrennial game between the metroplex's two NFL franchises brings out a lot of, well, nonsense. Little such nonsense more annoying than when local elected officials start beating their chests and bleating empty bromides of civic pride. Oh, and then, there are the bets.
At least, here in Howard County, we're halfway between Baltimore and DC, the county boasts large contingents of fans for both teams, right? We'd be immune from such nonsense, right.
I truly wish I had never seen this thing. So, Ken Ulman is challenging Rushern Baker because Landover is in Prince Georges County, not Washington DC, as locals know. At least that's the cover story.
Going to back to other posts on this and other blogs earlier this week, another motive I see why this little "bet" is being put forth is because Ken really, really, really wants to establish himself as the Baltimore area's candidate for Governor in 2014, and what better cause to champion to those mean ol' DC-area people that represents Baltimore, than the Ravens? Incidentally, Rushern Baker is also thought of by many to be the dreamiest potential Lieutenant Governor candidate out there as well. So could Ken be courting a playmate as well as a geographical region? Quite possibly.
This almost makes me wish the game were over already! But not quite.
And as to said game, I am predicting a high scoring affair, with the Ravens prevailing, 34-26.
