Marshmallow Man, from time to time, makes unannounced personal appearances. As with other, announced personal appearances, I am available for autographs and photographs (for those with the capability for flash phtography) but sometimes I just like to fly under the radar.
One such event was Monday evening at The Hawthorn Center. This was the kick off for Howard County Democratic Central Committee and Howard County Community Action Council member Dr. Clarence Lam's campaign for House of Delegates in the new District 12. (Well, the event was billed as that he was "exploring a run for Delegate", but, well, I'm going to be sensationalist and say he's running!)
This was a decent show of support for a first event for a first-time candidate, a little less than 18 months before the 2014 primary. I counted over 100 people through the door (I have heard it was more like 120, which is possible as I came a bit late) and about $5000 was raised for his campaign, which will supposedly (per Clarence's speech) bring his fundraising total to date close to $15,000.
The one thing I will note is that the only public elected officials there, besides the speaker, Baltimore County Delegate Dr. Dan Morhaim, were Registrar of Wills Byron McFarlane and Board of Education member Sandie French. There were also several members of the local Democratic Central Committee present. There was a County Council meeting Monday so I get why they couldn't attend, but our other Democratic legislators? Specifically those in 13?
To my knowledge, this was the first fundraising event held by any first-time candidate of either party who has their sights set on a 2014 legislative race. The District 12 race and Clarence Lam's candidacy bears watching as time goes on.
