OK, so better late than never if you're the Lieutenant Governor and you've got to whip yours out and show that yours is bigger than everyone else's. Campaign warchests, that is. And apparently Lt. Governor Brown succeeded, having raised $1.25M over 2012, edging out Ken Ulman and Doug Gansler.
The problem is though, for Messrs. Brown, Ulman, and Ms. Mizeur, that Attorney General Gansler remains, far and away, the campaign resource king. As this post shows, he has more than $5.2M on hand. This is about 25% more than the cash on hand of the other three putative 2014 Democratic primary hopefuls, combined. Whoa.
Obviously, this disparity will reduce over time. But it's not exactly like any of the other candidates are catching up to Gansler's total. There is only so much money out there and my take is that 2013 is the year for Ulman, Brown and Mizeur to make their move in the fundraising race. Because there are sure to be a lot of other expensive races on the docket in 2014, and with all the local races across the state, as well as state legislative contests, the campaign donation dollars are going to be harder and harder to come by as the primary drawns nearer.
On the Republican side, Frederick County Commissioner Blaine Young leads the pack with roughly $450,000 raised during 2012. Not even 10% of Gansler's cash on hand.
