The second community forum sponsored by the new School Safety Task Force will be held Monday, January 14 from 7-9pm at Wilde Lake High School. Marshmallow Man will be in attendance! Sara Toth presents the universe with an article about the forum here.
I missed the first forum Monday night, but Sara has an excellent article about the event, complete with video featuring comments by Superintendent Renee Foose, County Executive Ulman and Police Chief McMahon, here.
I think it was outstanding that this forum was not simply a forum for people to express their concerns and fears, and provided opportunities for creative, constructive feedback.
I don't know what measures can be taken to make our schools safer so that a Sandy Hook situation can't happen in Howard County. I know that I think giving teachers and administrators guns is a stupid idea. There may be merit to having an armed officer either stationed within or near the campus of all schools, but who's going to pay for that? And I certainly agree that school lockdown procedures have to really work and have to be taken seriously by all involved. But, I don't know, should schools have safe rooms? I remember when the original Elkridge Elementary School had a fallout shelter. So did the old Ellicott City Middle School, which I also attended. The fallout shelter became the art classroom though.
Looking forward to what should be a fascinating discussion on Monday!
