I can't say I'm particularly surprised. Delegate Guy Guzzone has chosen not to run for Howard County Executive in 2014, deciding instead to run for something in District 13. If he doesn't run for State Senate I shall eat my hat. You can read about all the fun and excitement here.
And fun and excitement it indeed portends! First off, if you're Janet Siddiqui, I believe that today, you decide that you are running for State Delegate. Anything else is simply inappropriate.
Second, what does this mean for the Democratic race for County Executive? Does Councilman Calvin Ball jump in, as many have conjectured, including this conjecturer? Does some lesser known Democrat whose name hasn't even been bandied about jump in? Maybe someone from the private sector? Vic Broccolino's retired, not sure his party affiliation. But if it isn't the blue party, it can change! Given as the only (though not officially announced) candidate, Courtney Watson, is perceived as more of a moderate, perhaps a challenge from someone in business would be less likely?
Third, if Calvin Ball does run, what does this mean for Council District 2? The only thing clear in my Council District is that there isn't a clear candidate. There are many who could, but as "Highlander" teaches us, there can only be one.
Fourth, what do you do if you're Allan Kittleman? Do you find some Democrat to run against Watson and rough her up a little so she's weakened for the general? I don't think that's wise. And no Democrat who won't support Watson won't jump the fence and support Kittleman. I dunno, but I think Allan's only shot-- and a small one-- is a bruising Democratic primary. Hard to imagine such would be the case, even if it were a Watson-Ball contest.
The dominoes are starting to fall, True Believers! Ain't this great???
