It's only a couple days before this great nation celebrates it's 237th birthday! And the one day where you can walk up to any Brit and say, "In your face!" But do so nicely. I know that if I see any of my British friends, I will augment mine with a double bicep pump.
And where you can celebrate with any Filipino or Liberian you may know, as their national birthdays are also July 4th, based on ours!
(BTW does anyone out there recall that the Phillipines was once American territory? Not Liberia, though. That was never part of the US.)
So here are your highlights and happenings for galavanting around the area on July 4:
River Hill parade starts at Pointers Run Elementary School at 9am and ends at the River Hill Village Center. It's a good way to start your day. Beware of pretense.
Then... you got a choice! What'cha gonna do, Tough Guy (or Gal)? For both the Allview and Longfellow parades commence at 10am. The Allview parade starts at Atholton Park and the Longfellow Park starts at Longfellow Elementary School. The legendary Longfellow Softball game immediately follows said Longfellow parade, and that may be just too much for me to pass up.
Then, on July 4, the one day hula hoops are outlawed in Howard County (at least they oughtta be), the fun at Columbia lakefront starts at 5pm, and fireworks are 9:15-9:30 ish.
For anyone parking in Oakland Mills and walking across the footbridge over 29 to the lakefront, from 6-7pm on the 4th you can meet members of Bridge Columbia and other decent-thinking, God-fearing local community activists and maybe learn a little about the future of that connection.
And across the river, the Catonsville parade starts at 3pm and the fireworks occur at approximately 9:15 or whenever the hell they feel like it. Because life is great in 21228, and if you don't like it, you're gonna get bum rushed back to Baltimore Highlands where you belong. Got it?
And if you wanna go farther away, the Nationals play in DC at 11:05 the morning of July 4! That's awesome.
That's all you need to have a great 4th! Well, maybe some steaks on the grill, steamed crabs and sparklers would be fun! And bug repellent.
Let's be careful out there.
