You know by now that the next Howard County Blog Party is Wednesday, 5:30-7:30 at The Second Chance Saloon in the Village of Oakland Mills, Columbia, Maryland. You know by now that it's free, and that you should go because it's cool to meet new people and to get connected to the blogocracy.
I am very grateful for my fellow bloggers who have made mentions of the party on their pages, shared the Facebook event page with their friends, etc. We have a nice number of RSVPs and there are a number of people who have told me they're coming who haven't RSVPd. And I've gotten good encouragement about doing the blog party thing. Especially since this is the first such event since Dennis Lane's passing. Maybe only the Marshmallow Man could've brought the zing and irreverence and fun back.
I don't know about any of that. We shall see. What I do know is that the blog party isn't about me. It isn't about promoting The 53 or myself or any interest of mine. It isn't about meeting my friends in the blog, activist, or political communities. I can see and talk with those folks through other means.
What it's about is bringing the new, hyper-local way of reporting what's going on in our community and sharing our perspectives about these things directly to the residents. Directly to the 99%-- and by that I mean the 99% of residents of this county who don't read the local blogs. It's about connecting people to people and adding to the community conversation. And if that sounds like me just chucking out vague bromides, well, maybe so, because it will take Wednesday to happen to determine what form these things will take. This isn't up to my direction or manipulation; it's up to whatever forces guide the universe to decide.
And if now I'm getting all mystical on you, well, go have another cup of coffee. It's Monday morning, after all. But sign up for the blog party first! Because the event will be what you make it to be, not me. And right now, it looks like it's going to be a time that you will be sorry if you miss it!
Happy National Soft Ice Cream Day! And let's be careful out there.
