At the beginning of 2014 the great Robert Downey Jr. posted this to his Facebook page:
So sowwy if your sensitive wittle eyes don't like the cursing. You probably can't handle hearing the word "condom" either. And/or you're an active Howard County Republican. Cause they're sensitive. Except..... when things go their way.
Anyway! I love some RDJ and this mantra was one that stuck with me in 2014, and indeed, I endeavored to do epic.... stuff the whole year long.
How'd I do? I'd say, without question, this was the best year I've had in about the last seven. Now, as some of you know, I've had some crappy years among the last few, so the bar could be low. But, as Stone Cold Steve Austin would say, "nuh-uh!" By all accounts, this has been a pretty damn good year. To wit:
I started the year with a new job, as COO of the Baltimore City Health Department.
I produced and sold the first ever blog t-shirts in the HoCo, the wonderful "Howard F'N County!!!" T-shirt.
Attended my first "Evening in the Stacks" in forever, and will be back in 2015!
Started my first novel!
In the primary election, I pissed off the Democrats, and in the general election, I pissed off the Republicans. So I was exactly where I wanted to be..... telling the truth! (And yes Frank, you did shout that at her. Although we still need to catch up)
It saw reconciliation with Lemle and even Mirabile.
It saw me destroy the Columbia Pioneers. Especially Barbara Russell.
Others who were exposed for what they truly are: Ginny Thomas, Reg Avery, Alan Klein, Russ Swatek, Lisa Markovitz.
It saw me lend a voice to a coalition of people, entities and organizations from across walks of life in Howard County to stand for the Inner Arbor Trust. And to stand for progress in Columbia and Howard County.
It saw a Starbucks with Allan.
It saw the start of Forward Columbia.
It saw me get back to running my first 2 5ks in a long time.
It saw another season of Old Guy Softball.
It saw three great trips to Happy Valley, two with my son and one on vacation.
It saw me see said son (say that ten times fast) off at a new school.
It saw my daughter turn 16 and decide to graduate high school early. And return to the sport she loves, lacrosse.
It saw the arrival of Tucker!
It saw my departure from Baltimore City for I believe, greener pastures in DC, providing service to others at the DC Department on Disability Services.
It saw the O's, Nats and Ravens in the playoffs!
And it saw me share in the joys, sorrows, successes, struggles, dreams, fears, and so much more of so many of you. As so many of you shared in mine. And I thank you all for that.
A couple other bloggers earlier today wrote about what they write about. Do they write about what people want to read, or what they want to convey? I think that's a fair balance for anyone who does this blogging thing. And I don't know where I sit in that debate, in terms of proportions of my posts. There have been a few times my posts have been true vents. But the vast majority of the time, I want to communicate something to the readers, be they my opinions, feelings, my desire to make them laugh, and sometimes, my desire to make them wonder what the hell is wrong with me.
And it's all kinda epic shit, really. At least I think so. So I think for 2015.... more of the same! Why not?
Taking a little break again for a couple days for the New Year. May your 2014 end and 2015 begin on a happy and healthy note.
And let's be careful out there.
