So, you may remember this picture that I posted at the beginning of this year:
And of course, this accompanying blog post. I posted that on December 30, 2014, exactly one year ago.
So, how did I do? What a year it was, it was.
This year saw me come and go on the job front, as I left my job with DC Government in December to start a new job at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. Those of you who know me know that most of my career has been spent in the management of biomedical and clinical research projects, and so my APL job is much more along those lines.
I don't talk much about my personal life in my blog, but it was a transformational year in my life. My divorce was finalized in June. My daughter graduated high school (a year early) and started college, meaning I now have two tuition bills to subsidize. And I spent the year developing a relationship with a very wonderful, special person, who you may have met at the 2015 Evening in the Stacks, among other places, and if you didn't, well, you'll get the chance to meet her this year, maybe. I am a very fortunate man.
I was elected again to the Oakland Mills Village Board. I'm honestly not sure if I'm glad I was elected again to the board or not. I think the sad thing I notice this year is, how much village boards in Columbia, if not the Columbia Association itself, really don't matter. And yeah, I suppose I'll catch flak for that last sentence. But I do think our local institutions work around the Columbia power structure more than they do with it. And can you blame them? The little power structures are either filled with pockets of zealotry, or with people who stand uniquely unqualified to wield the authority that they do.
Still, I do feel like I have done some good on the village board this year, things that would not have gotten done had I not been elected to the board. So I take the experience as a net plus.
I went some places. Took my first Ravens road game trip to see them play the 49ers in San Francis.....errrrrr, Santa Clara. Great time and a good game, though the purple and black lost. Lots of that this season. Had a fun trip to Happy Valley for a Penn State game. Went to some great concerts, the best being Imagine Dragons in June. And took a fun trip to New York to see the lights, and of course, snap some pics of Trump Tower. That place is freaking YUGE!!! Nope, I definitely didn't get schlonged this year on the travel front.
Nor did I get schlonged when it came to material to write about. There was the first year of our new County Executive and our new Governor. The County Council flexing it's muscle in all sorts of ways; the General Assembly as a whole, not so much. Baltimore. Oh, my God, yes. What happened in Baltimore. And nationally, stuff about race and stuff about guns and stuff about symbols. A Kittleman-Hogan dust-up over school funding. A lot of local stuff I talked about in a post last week. And, oh yes, those schools. The schools are going to be an issue of special import to me in 2016, I do believe. And here I thought I was done with them when my daughter graduated. And there were many, many issues in between. Barely touched the Presidential campaign.
And there was other fun stuff. I met Ric Flair and Rowdy Roddy Piper! The latter being kinda someone I was a huge fan of as a youngster, and whose attitude I very well may have modeled the tone and tenor of this blog about. And as it happened, I met him less than two weeks before he passed. Seems like 2015 took a lot of people and things that mattered to us, from us. And that's not much fun at all. But it does bring gratitude for the life that each of us have. As I'm getting a picture of my head of RRP, Meadowlark Lemon, Leonard Nimoy and my old family cat Snickers sitting around a table, playing cards like in the last episode of "Homicide: Life on the Street".
Have I mentioned that I'm kinda unsure how my mind works sometimes?
And so I pour the last of the holiday egg nog and raise a toast to you, True Believers, for sticking out through another year of Zesty Topicality! What will 2016 see? The end of Foose? The removal of ADL and Janet Siddiqui? A Ravens game in London? Who's taking the gold in modern pentathlon in Rio? Who the heck knows? But you can count on some epic shit, that's for sure.
Let's be careful out there.
