HCPSS Board of Education Chair Cindy Vaillaincourt was on the Kojo NNamdi Show on WAMU last week. You can listen to it here. It was supposed to be a discussion of the issues between the current board and Superintendent Renee Foose, but the Super didn't show. Which is probably just as well, because neither side really needed to say something that could come back and haunt them later-- like, say, law suit time. Besides, former Board of Education member Ann DeLacy did call in-- I believe she called Cindy Vaillaincourt "one of the most dishonest people I have ever known." And this is why we can't have nice things. Anyway, listen if you want to hear more of that nonsense.
One thing that seems to be out there that is ridiculous and demonstrates ignorance is that the opposition to Foose by the newly-elected Board members, as well as by Cindy Vaillaincourt and Bess Altwerger, as well as by a large segment of the community, is because of Dr. Foose's sexual orientation. I have never, ever heard anyone mention that Dr. Foose being a lesbian is why they oppose her. In fact, I didn't even know her sexual orientation until about this time, a year ago. It doesn't matter to me and I suggest, not to many others. I don't understand the tactic, other than to goad someone into making homophobic comments and/or to attempt to curry favor in the LGBTQ community. Or, maybe it's just another attempt at obfuscation, at drawing the attention of the real issue-- Dr. Foose's absurd consolidation of power, which this board has thankfully and appropriately begun to dismantle.
OK, so changes are afoot to my social media presence. On Facebook, I do have separate pages for this blog and for the live broadcast "Do It Live!" which James Howard and I do every other Sunday evening. But I have also created an aggregator page, called "Bill Woodcock for Howard County" which will be a repository of all my community activity fun, plus news articles I think people should heed.
Why this? First off, chill out-- there's no political campaign announcement in the offing. After all, I don't have a campaign bank account, as ScottE recently pointed out. And isn't it really all about the money? But, more seriously, I'm realizing that when I'm posting my political and community thoughts on FB, that I'm inviting trolling. And my friends list is much larger than my followers lists, so said trolls are going to be reaching a larger audience. Of course, it's also an audience that may not want to see such trolling. So, long story short-- if you want to debate politics with me, go to the "Bill Woodcock for Howard County" page and we can do that. If you want to talk sports, movies, restaurants, parenting, life-- go to my personal Facebook page. Makes sense? I hope so. And I'm sure that on occasion I will post some of my social media presence on the personal page.
And, speaking of which-- you don't want to miss tonight's edition of Do It Live! coming your way to YouTube at 7pm! The topic: elitism! What is it? Who practices it? How do we spot it? The answers are not as cut and dried as some may think. Anyway, we take the whole half hour tonight to explore this topic. Where will it lead? Tune in this evening and find out!
And let's be careful out there.
