The biggest social media kerfuffle within the social media sphere of The Land of Milk and Honey within the last 24 hours was not, unfortunately, the incredible last edition of Do It Live! Though it should be, because it is an excellent live broadcast.
Rather, it has been the Facebook page entitled "Howard County Hate Watch", which, as of the moment of this writing, boasts 37 likes. Very interesting page, this one. The profile photo is a big red heart. The cover photo is a pleasant "Welcome to Howard County" sign at a bridge. The content is calling out opponents of CB9, including specific individuals by name; the "No Sanctuary Howard County" Facebook page and accompanying effort sponsored by the Republican Central Committee; and recent apparent KKK activity in western Howard County. All in all, a pretty angry little page.
I also suspect it's a fake.
There's not one thing positive on this page. The photos used to frame the page, especially the profile photo, completely disconnect from the content of the page. And this page shows no affiliation with any group, nor are there any individuals who claim ownership of the page. And, some of the posts on this page are atrocious. In terms of spelling and grammar, that is.
Ahhh, gentle readers, I let you hang there for a beat! The content is pretty terrible. Make no mistake, I have strong negative feelings about the local Republican Party's tactics in opposing CB9. One of the Republican Central Committee members recently accused me of not being a good Christian because I encouraged action against a Facebook post that I believe was a threat against the County Council.
But I've been active and following politics on all levels for 30 years. I am a very seasoned, veteran observer and participant in the political wars, from Presidential politics to village boards. While, on this particular issue, I have very strong ideological and tactical disagreements with my political opponents, I also think they have the right to state their disagreements, and proceed with their tactics as they see fit. As I've written recently, it's a new world of political discourse. I'm not sure I'm totally comfortable with it yet, but I'm willing to participate in it.
So who's put this page up and why? I don't know and frankly, I don't care. It may be an individual who is really, really upset with some statements made on social media by certain local activists. Possibly a supporter of CB9. Also, I believe just as possibly, an opponent of CB9 who is trying to sucker someone into agreeing that so-and-so is a racist, and then use that person's word against them, as some sort of additional helping of red meat. But, I think we can all agree that there has been enough red meat thrown around on all sides of this debate.
So whoever "Howard County Hate Watch" is, show yourself, identify yourself, and participate in the debate. Although, I have the feeling that, you already are participating. Otherwise, you can go ahead and publish your views on your FB page, that is of course OK. But I'm going to concern myself with the opponents I do see, not those I don't. Experience has taught me that well. I have a feeling though, Mr. or Ms. HoCoHaWa, that your next move will reveal yourself to us.
And, given the Executive Order the President signed today, maybe the whole CB9 debate is moot anyway? I don't know. Just came home to the news and haven't looked much into it.
Tomorrow evening, I take a look at something the Governor is doing regarding addiction treatment.
Let's be careful out there.
