I am a simple man. I was brought up in a working-class family and I was taught to obey simple rules. One of those being, that elders should never ever, embarrass or bring shame to their younger generations.
Imagine, then, the plight of one Jahantab Siddiqui. A good public servant and political activist, who has served in responsible positions on the staffs of Senator Barbara Mikulski, Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, and most recently, County Executive Allan Kittleman. A fine record of public service even if you don't agree with all the people he was worked for. And I doubt there's anyone out there in Readerland who does!
Jahantab Siddiqui also is the nephew of one Nayab Siddiqui, whose wife, Janet, recently became a candidate for Howard County Council in District 4. Yes, THAT Janet Siddiqui. And THAT Nayab Siddiqui.
She who was a former member of the Howard County Board of Education. She who tried to run for a House of Delegates seat in 2014, but so infuriated sitting state legislators so much that she became persona non grata. She who said that mold is not a health issue. She who ignored mental health issues in the HCPSS. She who steadfastly stood by unindicted (unfortunately) former Superintendent Renee Foose. She who signed off on the contract that allowed Foose the ultimate of golden parachutes. She whose every word spoken while sitting on the HCPSS Board of Education dais, short of "hello" and the Pledge of Allegiance was a lie. She who was soundly defeated in the primary for re-election in 2016.
He who engineered said House of Delegates switcheroo in 2014. He who ran against the sitting District 13 Delegates and was soundly and properly defeated. He who represents the so-called "independent" business owners (Columbia gas station owners) who operate a ethically bankrupt and possibly illegal cartel to keep gas station competition out of Columbia, and therefore keep gas prices up. He who sowed deceit and division on the Howard County Democratic Central Committee for many years.
THAT Janet and Nayab Siddiqui.
The only thing crazier than the thought of these people continuing to run for office if this. She might win. With $100,000 in her campaign coffers, thanks to Nayab, Janet will be able to spend as no other County Council candidate before in the history of Howard County. Let's assume that 5,000 votes wins the primary. Janet will be able to spend cash, assuming she doesn't raise....errrr.....acquire any more, at the rate of $20 per vote! And that's for the primary. I'm sure she will power up again for the general.
Let's hope she doesn't make it that far.
A number of great people in this community have asked me to run for Howard County Democratic Central Committee. I was on the HCDCC for 10 years and I have a great fondness for it. And to go back to it would be an intriguing proposition. There's a lot I could offer and a lot I could learn.
But, a big problem. To be on the HCDCC one has to vow to support all elected Democrats, including the winners of the 2018 primary. I would in no way want to support Janet Siddiqui should she win the primary. So I have a crisis of conscience and I find I must work to ensure that Janet and Nayab Siddiqui are purged from Howard County political life. With totality and finality.
Please note that does not automatically mean I am supporting her primary opponent. Other than several pleasant conversations with Deb Jung I haven't sat down and talked with her in detail. But now I will do so. I want to support a candidate in District 4 who understands that District 4 is a very important economic engine in Howard County. A candidate who will keep that engine vibrant and growing. Deb has been well-recommended and a lot of people whose opinions I respect support her. But I need to learn for myself.
And should Janet win the primary, no way will I support Lisa Kim, her of the Kellyanne Conway selfie and the insane policy positions. I have no desire to see extremists of either side of the political spectrum on the Howard County Council, and Lisa Kim certainly fits that bill.
But to close back with the matter at hand. Whatever you may think of the Council candidates in District 4, Janet Siddiqui is by far the worst of the bunch. I have no doubt that Deb Jung and Lisa Kim, while I may not agree with all (or any) of their positions, are running for the right reasons. Most importantly, because they want to serve the public. Like Nayab and Janet's own nephew, who I'm sure will be facepalming a lot for the next four months.
But Janet Siddiqui does not have good reasons for serving in office. She is filled with arrogance and disdain and bile and vulgar thoughts as they pertain to holding elected office. She considers it her birthright and she thinks she and Nayab will form some sort of "ultimate Howard County power couple". But using tactics that are nothing but disingenuous and filled with mistruths, halftruths and falsehoods. She is exactly why people hate politicians. And she is in our midst.
I'm sure Dr. Siddiqui will get this metaphor. She is a gross malignancy in Howard County. And I and thousands of others will descend upon her and purge her from our system once and for all. Remission will be sweet indeed.
Let's be careful out there.
