Pondering the ponderous in the midst of Easter Weekend, 2018:
I knew there was something funny with the transfer of $100K into Janet Siddiqui's campaign about from the Nayab Siddiqui PAC. I forget what that PAC is called. Oh, yeah-- the "I'm a dope" PAC. Anyway, looks like the Swiss Family Siddiqui is in trouble with the State Board of Elections, as the maximum amount a PAC can transfer into a campaign account is a paltry, yet still potent, $24K. The $76,000 question is, therefore: why did this transfer even occur in the first place? The arrogance and avarice of the Siddiquis knows no bounds. My God, it's even made me think Lisa "I'm shocked my husband was once a strip club owner" Kim almost looks like a qualified candidate for County Council.
The most disgusting campaign sign I've seen, and likely to see, this 2018 state and local cycle belongs to our very own County Executive, Allan Kittleman! I haven't seen it in person, but I've seen it on a Facebook post, and Facebook posts never contain nonsense, right? Well, anyway, this one is red with the Allan Kittleman poster design in the middle. With the words "Howard County values" over the tiny sign.
Ummm, no. Allan Kittleman doesn't embody this community's values. And to be honest, neither does any elected official or candidate for office. No, I'm of the crazy belief that a community's values are drawn from the people and institutions within it. It is the job of our elected leaders to manage and lead according to those values, not what they think those values should be. It comes from the bottom up, not the top down. Come on isn't that what a "servant leader" is all about? And here his followers say his what a politician is supposed to be? And how can you say, "People, Not Politics", but then make this campaign all about you? Yet another dud from Sean "Flashbulb" Murphy, Runty Little Useless Fascist Guy, and the rest of that Cavalcade of Zeroes in the local GOP.
I was happy to attend the opening of the new Elkridge fire station last week. I grew up in Elkridge and I know a new fire station was something that the community had wanted for decades. With the new library and the new fire station, things are coming alive in the 21075!
Am I the only one that has a feeling that Howard County Government, including the Howard County Public School System, has no idea how to plan? Or strategize? I recently read a social media thread where the HCPSS is forming a committee to find a satisfactory site for HS14. But that a Elkridge HS14 (which I think will happen in the next year or two) will come at the expense of a Vo-Tech Center?
This is why I like Sabina Taj, the candidate for the BOE. She speaks openly and enthusiastically about innovation in our schools. And in providing paths for kids who are not college-bound. Vo-Tech education is such a path. And she has been far from the only one. I'm hoping people start realizing who they are and they start coming to their senses about this particular issue. And, on a bigger picture, that we as a county stop pitting communities against each other. Be they communities based on geography, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or any other criteria.
Let's be careful out there.
