Door-to-door canvassing is one of my favorite things to do in political campaigns-- heck, it's one of my favorite things to do, period. The best feeling is going out into the community and meeting people and finding out what they think. The exchange of ideas is fun-- even if their ideas don't agree with mine.
But it's not all erudite, scholarly, policy-based conversation. Or even political conversation. It's fun to chat with people about the weather, their yard, their house, sports, movies, the car, or any other topic.
And the campaign trail has produced a few misadventures as well. That have nothing to do with speaking to or with another human being.
It's amazing how many ways a person can trip. They can trip walking down stairs. They can trip walking up stairs. They can trip on level pavement. They can trip on a sidewalk. They can trip on a curb. They can trip on grass. Inuit nations who have over 200 words for "snow"? If there were a nation of canvassers, there would be 200 word for "tripping".
When one is out with others canvassing, conversation has to be more about the body politic. Surely, this must be so or else we would all go mad. And conversations must be about a wide range of topics. Some recent ones within the last few weeks? Iceland, funnel cakes, 90s hip-hop, Star Trek, Corbin Bernsen, puppets, Royal Crown cola, chakras, bookmobiles, Billy Idol, "The Shape of Water", and of course, who was the best Joker? Jack Nicholson, Cesar Romero, Heath Ledger, Mark Hamill or Jared Leto?
I had to go help a 75 year old man and 95 year old woman chase the cat that ran out of their house when she opened the door to talk with me.
I talked with a guy about his really cool Tesla! Yet, really expensive as well.
I have seen houses of every size, shape, and style. I have come to better appreciate the design styles that went into the older villages of Columbia. And I have seen a few examples of some really poor planning and development decisions. Yes, even here in Howard County.
I have educated people to those little porcelain cats that some people put on the roofs or sides of their houses.
I have seen people be really annoyed by canvassers coming through, and I have seen people threat the same canvassers with something that could almost be described as revelry. As if we were some sort of troupe of celebrities.
Yes, the experiences of this 2018 season have been many and varied. And they're still not even close to being over. Strange, strange game this is.
Let's be careful out there.
