Elections aren't fair. The person whose values identify most with the area they wish to represent, doesn't always win. The person with the better resume, doesn't always win. The person who cares more about the average person, doesn't always win. The person who is much less the ideologue, doesn't always win. And the person who is the most compassionate, doesn't always win. The Senate race in Maryland District 9 seems to be one of those places where all of these things run true.
Let's hope that in 2018, that finally ceases to be the case. This blog proudly endorses Katie Fry Hester over the incumbent Senator, Gail Bates.
Hester's background is in the role of international development. So, OK. I know a little about how international development works. And it's hard. Anyone successful in this world can easily navigate the political waters of Annapolis, and can represent the citizens of District 9.
From the beginning, Hester's campaign has been a purple one-- one that doesn't include only Democrats, but also, Independents and Republicans as well. This is more than a nod to political reality, but, in sitting down with Hester, an acknowledgement of how good government gets done. With the best ideas from all points along the political spectrum. There aren't a lot of candidates who are running away from political polarization these days-- on either side of the aisle. But Hester is one and she is wise to do so.
Oh, and please don't give me the "a Democrat can not win" in District 9 stuff. Yes, District 9 is a hard district for a Democrat. A very hard one. But with District 9B home to the Watson vs. Flanagan marquee matchup for State Delegate, one can expect Democratic participation in this race to skyrocket. That starts to put Senate 9 in play. Add to that the 9A Delegate race and the fact that Independents are leaning more towards Democrats than Republicans, and now you have a Senate race in play. It can be done.
I believe District 9 will be proud of a State Senator Katie Fry Hester. Gone would be the one who runs around speaking incoherent falsehoods about a "genderless society" and holds breakfasts with corrupt officials in broad daylight. And in would be someone creative, poised, highly intelligent, professional, and ready to lead. That's what's called an upgrade, folks. Like from Windows 3.1 to Windows 10.
Let's be careful out there.
