Last Friday my lunch companion reminded me of the fact that the final council redistricting plan will be voted on this evening. I do think I'm going to still plan to attend the School Board candidates' forum Monday, though the thought of seeing scores of aggrieved Wheatfielders in the Banneker Room is quite tempting.
It's going to be interesting to see what map winds up winning the votes needed to pass. And it will be nice to finally get this council redistricting thing behind us. Because this HAS to be one of the tiniest molehills I've seen turned into a mountain in a long time.
What's a bit amusing about this is that I do feel the local Democrats think that with this new map, the Council can remain 4-1 Democratic. I'm not too sure. I have a suspicion that District 1 will go back to the GOP following the 2014 elections. After all, it was a solidly Republican district for 16 years prior to Courtney Watson's election.
Now, all that said, I have zero idea who potential candidates for that seat in 2014 would be... of course, that is assuming Courtney Watson runs for County Executive. So regardless of what voter registration numbers might indicate, that is a conservative-thinking district and I'd have to mark that down as a "lean GOP" in the event of an open contest in 2014.
