I've finally taken the time to peruse the list of CA salaries which was published last week, after years of efforts by the Alliance for a Better Columbia (ABC), who apparently don't have better things to do. Luke LaVoie brings you the story here. Incidentally, why does Luke now have a tribune.com e-mail address? Not explorehoward? Egad, is there possibly some new reorganization afoot?
But I digress. Good for you, ABC, in getting this list published. But now that you have it, whatever are you going to do with it? To be honest, whatever were you hoping to achieve by gaining access to this in the first damn place?
So I'm going to guess that the publishing of this list is creating a first class firestorm in CA. Although individual names don't appear on the list, come on, we know who many of these top wage-earners are. I'm sure that most people with a brain stem who work in CA can take the list and place numbers with faces. I am sure that people want to know now why so-and-so makes such-and-such, and how they can get that deal?
The resultant HR turmoil, which is sure to come will lead to a few outcomes. One, that CA employees will receive pay increases in order to create better salary equity across the association. This won't come overnight and only after a lot of study, which will also take time. And how are these increased salaries going to be paid? Well, there are a few ways. Two ways CA could afford the increases would be by cutting staff, or by raising liens and program fees. Oops! Perhaps not the outcomes you wanted to hear? So sorry about that.
But, a little group of angry, bitter Columbians (huh, A-B-C) could hardly care about that, correct? As they ponder their morning granola (perhaps wheat germ!) and stick another folk album on the turntable, they are satisfied that the big, evil corporate monster has gotten its comeuppance.
Sorry, ABC crew, but in serving your own goals, you have very likely ensured that 100,000 people with extraordinarily little interest in this topic will pay a price.
